Celebrating 60 years of KEF
Want to learn more about KEF, our philosophy and the way we work? To celebrate our 60th anniversary we spoke to various members of the team about sound, what excites them and what they think lies in KEF's future.
Six Decades of Great British Music
As we look back over the 60 years of KEF’s speaker innovation, it’s natural that we’d also take stock of the way the sounds coming out of the loudspeakers over the years have shifted and innovated too.
In doing so, we built a set of playlists which illustrate each of those six decades chronologically. Of course there’s a whole dizzying world of music out there to choose from, but in celebrating our British heritage and roots, we wanted to tell a story that reflects ours.

So this is a demonstration of six decades of British influence on the way we listen, with all the sonic, stylistic and technical advances from legendary musicians and producers.
You can hear how technology advanced from the early beginnings of jerry-rigged sound synthesis in the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, through synth pop and rave, to the ultra-finessed digital technique of James Blake and FKA Twigs.
But just as importantly how rock, disco, reggae and pop evolved the way that “real instruments” and human voices sound. Some threads weave right through the decades – from the sixties to today, jazz, folk and soul appear in new iterations, for example. With each listen you’ll hear more details of the evolution of styles and techniques: indeed it was a joy to make them, opening our ears to the shifting tides of change over the years, and we hope you take as much pleasure in visiting and revisiting them as we do.

KEF History
KEF is named after Kent Engineering and Foundry where our story began. Our founder Raymond Cooke was propelled by a love of music and a refusal to compromise, and he leveraged technology at every turn to ensure KEF’s position at the cutting edge of audio.
