What is a HiFi System?

6 mins read
High-fidelity, or HiFi, represents the pinnacle of audio excellence, a term synonymous with superior speakers, subwoofers, and more. But what exactly is HiFi sound?

Join us as we delve into the essence of high fidelity, uncovering its true significance, and guide you in crafting your perfect speaker system to infuse your home with the unparalleled luxury of HiFi audio.

What Does High Fidelity Mean?

High fidelity describes audio that is reproduced from the original with the highest possible accuracy.

It’s sitting listening to a record in the comfort of your home and feeling like you’re in the crowd at the concert. It’s watching a movie and feeling like the actors are in the room with you. It’s playing a video game, and the game's world comes alive as every little sound is heard precisely
.
The trademarks of high fidelity audio are:

•        Minimal levels of distortion
•        A full and accurate range of audible frequencies
•        The sound spreads around the space evenly
•        Each component of the soundscape is unique and distinct
•        The midrange, treble and bass frequencies are well-balanced

Why Choose High Fidelity?

Imagine a relaxing summer evening unwinding in the garden, listening to music with family and friends as the sun begins to set. An ordinary Bluetooth speaker linked to a Spotify account can provide a pleasant enough backing track for the occasion - but that´s not Hifi.

But with KEF’s HiFi speakers, you can experience the music exactly as the artist intended. Enjoy every note and harmony. Identify each subtle instrument that underpins the melody. High fidelity enables you to rediscover your favourite tracks, in pristine detail, like never before.

How to Build a HiFi System

Ready to level up your listening with HiFi? Our tips can help you to craft the perfect sound system.

Audio Source

For starters, you’ll need an audio source, such as a quality turntable for your vinyl or a decent CD player. You can also use a wireless connection speaker to connect to a streaming service with high quality files. Unfortunately, Spotify doesn’t have a HiFi option (yet), though Tidal and Qobuz have HiFi options for certain paid tiers.

When streaming, there are several file formats that you can use for high fidelity sound.

Waveform Audio File Format (WAV) is an uncompressed format similar to a CD. Apple has its own version called Audio Interchange File Format (AIFF).

Free Lossless Audio Compression (FLAC) is a lossless file, meaning the file size is small without losing vital information.

Master Quality Authenticated (MQA) are Tidal’s HiFi files. There can be some loss with these, and the fidelity is similar to that of smaller files of other types. For this reason, Tidal is currently replacing MQA content with FLAC format files.

Digital to Analogue Converter

If your sound system doesn’t have one pre-built in, you’ll need an external Digital to Analogue Converter (DAC). This makes your streamed sound HiFi by fine-tuning the quality and tonality, taking snapshots of the digital soundwaves and converting them  to an analogue wave that can be amplified and understood by the human ear.

The higher the sample rate and bit depth, the higher the fidelity. The sample rate is the number of snapshots taken of the original soundwave, while the bit depth refers to how much detail each snapshot can capture.

Amplifier

An amplifier is also key to a HiFi system if you have passive speakers, meaning speakers are not driven by built-in amps. An amplifier should boost your audio signal without distorting it. However, KEF offers active HiFi speakers, so the addition of an external amplifier isn’t needed to enjoy exceptional high-fidelity sound.

See our guide to amplifiers and our comparison guide to active and passive speakers to make the right choice for your personal HiFi system.

KEF HiFi Speaker System

Speakers

Of course, the star of the show in a HiFi System is the speakers, usually a set of two, from which sound is perfectly reproduced. At KEF, we offer both wired and wireless speakers. See our wired speaker guide and wireless speaker guide to make the best choice of HiFi speaker for you.

Subwoofer

These speakers can be enhanced by the addition of a subwoofer, a specialist piece of audio equipment that deals with high-fidelity bass reproduction, taking some of the workload from your speakers and improving the overall performance of the system.

Placement

The finishing touch to your system is placing everything in an optimal position so the sound will blend perfectly in the room. Our speaker placement guide can help you with this.

KEF’s HiFi Speaker Technology

At KEF, our speakers are created with several innovative technologies that produce that crisp high-fidelity sound.

    Uni-Q

Uni-Q brings the even spread of HiFi sound, giving you all the same audio details wherever you are in the room.

Here at KEF, we place the speaker’s tweeter at the acoustic centre of the midrange cone (in some cases in the bass and midrange cone), dispersing all frequencies from a single point source.

    Single Apparent Source Technology

Working with the Uni-Q driver, Single Apparent Source Technology eliminates the interference that comes from drivers all producing sound from separate points. This technology can be found in Blade One Meta, Blade Two Meta and the LS60 Wireless.

    Metamaterial Absorption Technology

Unwanted distortion is the enemy of HiFi, but our Metamaterial Absorption Technology (MAT) handles it with ease, eliminating unwanted sound from the rear of the driver with its intelligent structure.

    Music Integrity Engine

Music Integrity Engine (MIE) comprises our in-house algorithms, which work together to coordinate the different pieces of your HiFi for perfect accuracy, detail, and timing for your room type.

Create a HiFi system with a KEF wired or wireless speaker, along with subwoofers and speaker accessories to listen like never before.
