Choosing the Right Speaker or Subwoofer Size for Your Room

6 mins read
Whether you're setting up a home theatre, upgrading your HiFi system, or enhancing your living room’s sound quality, choosing the right speaker or subwoofer size for your space is crucial. The room’s size, ceiling height, and other factors all play significant roles in determining which speakers or subwoofer will deliver the best performance for your listening experience.

In this guide, we’ll explore how to choose the ideal speaker or subwoofer for your home, from small bedrooms to large living spaces, and recommend some of KEF’s finest options for each scenario.

Room Size and Speaker Selection

The size of your room is one of the most important factors in deciding what size speakers to buy. Smaller rooms, such as bedrooms, require speaker setups different from those in large open-plan living areas.

Speakers for Small Rooms

If you’re setting up a speaker for a small room, such as a bedroom or a small living space, compact wireless speakers or bookshelf speakers are your best option. These speakers are designed to deliver high-quality sound without overwhelming the room.

For smaller areas, we recommend our LSX II Wireless HiFi System, which offers superior audio in a compact form. The KEF Q1 Meta or Q3 Meta from our Q Series range is another excellent choice for smaller rooms, providing clarity and depth without taking up too much space.

If you want the benefit of a compact design but feel you’re missing that depth of sound, adding a subwoofer for a small room can provide the deep bass response you’re looking for to elevate your listening experience further. Our Kube 8 MIE sub is ideal for smaller rooms, delivering impactful bass without overpowering the limited space.

Speakers for Large Rooms

In larger spaces, such as spacious living rooms, open-plan areas, or dedicated home theatres, you’ll need speakers that can project sound evenly across the room. Imagine you’re throwing a party for friends or hunkering down to enjoy your favourite fast-paced movie, the more impactful the sound, the more immersive the experience will be.

We recommend floor-standing speakers as the best speaker choice for larger rooms. They provide a more expansive soundstage, can handle higher volumes without risk of distortion and deliver more bass, resulting in a seamless, well-balanced sound that perfectly permeates the room.

As an example, the R7 Meta and R11 Meta floorstanding speakers from our R Series lineup,  are perfect for larger spaces, offering precision and power to amplify your listening experience further.

Alternatively, if you’re looking for wireless options, our LS60 Wireless system is a sleek solution with high-resolution audio and powerful output, perfect for big spaces up to 200 sqm or even larger when you add a subwoofer.

Pairing your speakers with a subwoofer for a large room enhances the audio experience further, especially in home theatres. This instantly elevates the soundscape, creating a noticeably fuller sound that uplifts every beat and provides the much-needed richness that larger spaces cry out for.

If this is what you’re looking for, our KC92 or Kube 15 MIE subwoofers deliver powerful, room-filling bass and are perfectly suited for larger spaces. For those seeking even more bass, our KC92, which can be paired with the KSK92 subwoofer stacking kit to merge up to three subs into one powerful unit, offers unbeatable performance, filling larger rooms with thunderous depth and dimension. Think powerful precision that evokes the senses. This makes for a much more immersive experience, allowing you to truly feel the weight and texture of the sound as it carries throughout the room.

Ceiling height, which we’ll discuss next, also plays a role. Rooms with higher ceilings allow sound to dissipate more easily, which may require larger speakers or more powerful amplifiers to ensure a rich, full-bodied sound throughout the room.

Acoustics: What to Consider

Acoustics are crucial when choosing the optimum speaker size for your room. Everything from room layout to ceiling height directly influences them.

    Ceiling Height and Speaker Size

Ceiling height is an important factor when choosing the best speaker size for a room. Smaller speakers are better suited for spaces with low ceilings, as they minimise unwanted reflections that can distort the sound.

Our Q350 Bookshelf Speakers are perfect for low-ceiling spaces, providing balanced sound with minimal interference.

In rooms with high ceilings, consider larger speakers to ensure even sound distribution. Our R11 Meta Floorstanding Speaker, combined with a powerful subwoofer like our Kube 12 MIE, will help to deliver deep, rich sound that can effortlessly fill large spaces with high ceilings.

Architectural Speakers: An Alternative for Custom Solutions

If you're looking for a seamless, discreet solution for your audio setup, our Architectural Speakers offer in-wall or in-ceiling speakers that blend perfectly into your home’s design while providing the high-quality, crystal-clear sound you know and expect from KEF products.

These are perfect for creating a custom audio experience in any room, from kitchens to large open-plan spaces, and they can be combined with subwoofers for an enhanced bass feel.

A Snapshot of Choosing the Right Subwoofer Size

While we’ve touched on subwoofer pairings above, your optimum subwoofer size depends heavily on the layout and acoustic characteristics of the space in question. Here is a general size snapshot of things to consider when selecting your subwoofer:

        * Subwoofer for a Small Room: A compact subwoofer (with around 8-10 inches bass driver) works best in smaller rooms.

        * Subwoofer for a Large Room: A bigger subwoofer (with 10-12 inches bass driver or more) is needed for larger rooms. Larger rooms benefit from more than one subwoofer. The greatest performance can be expected when four subwoofers are in use - for example, the KC92 paired with our dedicated stacking kit.

When setting up your subwoofer, placement is key. Too close to a wall, and you may encounter unwanted distortion or jolty bass. Experiment with positioning, keeping in mind the room's layout and acoustics.
